Cottage by the Sea REEF program
aims to develop self-esteem, community and leadership skills in children, as
they move through the transitional years from primary to secondary school, who
experience disadvantage as a result of health, economic and/or social issues.
Purpose and Scope
The REEF program, in partnership with the Lord Mayor’s Foundation, works in
conjunction with the Take a Break and Give it a Go programs.
The purpose of The Give it a Go project is to provide primary school aged
children from disadvantaged backgrounds with opportunities to become physically
active, health conscious and socially included within the community. The Give it
a Go program is designed and delivered by experts with a long history in
delivering physical activity and wellness programs to children. They will ensure
the correct programs are delivered to help address not only the issue of social
isolation of children due to disadvantaged backgrounds, but also the wider issue
of childhood inactivity within the community.
The REEF program is an innovative three year program run by Cottage by the
Sea. The main purpose of the REEF program is to provide ongoing extra support
for children through the transitional years from primary to secondary school.
There are three key areas to the program:
1. SELF
The first year on the program will focus on:
- personal confidence
- decision making
- mutual support within a group
- socialisation skills and communication
- increased level agility and physical co-ordination
2.
COMMUNITY
The second year of the program will focus on:
- teamwork and co-operation
- initiative and resourcefulness
- developing a sense of community spirit
3.
LEADERSHIP
The focus of the third and final year of the program will
be to encourage the children to display decision-making and leadership qualities
by planning and conducting activities.
