Barista Training at The Gordon for our Mentors!

Our Stories

The first Old Mentor program for the year is about reconnecting with one another while also gaining some new qualifications. At Cottage by the Sea, we are all about providing opportunities for young people and supporting them to be the best versions of themselves. To be able to give that support, it is important to build relationships with other organisations in our local community.

The Gordon in Geelong has been a long-time supporter of Cottage by the Sea. Our Mentors were very lucky to complete a 1-day Coffee Making short course that was sponsored by The Gordon. This is a very popular barista course that has helped our previous Mentors gain employment working in cafés and coffee shops.

It was an all-day course for our Mentors, which was made lots of fun by the teacher with competitions and challenges that tested our Mentors on the theory that they had learned throughout the day. Cottage Camp Leaders were super impressed with the way the Mentors encouraged each other and worked together, from providing feedback on each other’s coffee-making to helping out with certain elements that they were struggling with.

It means so much to our Mentors to be able to participate in courses like this and the feedback at the end of the program reflected this. Some comments from Mentors were:

“I loved trying new things because I think it will be very useful in the future. The barista training will help me with my job at Maccas and it can get me another job as a waiter.”

“I enjoyed the course because it will help with my resume and showed how skilled I am.”

Cottage by the Sea is incredibly grateful for the generosity of The Gordon in providing an important and, in some ways, life-changing opportunity for our Mentors.
