From the Country to the Coast

Our Stories

Quite often at the Cottage we have children who travel from all over Victoria to participate in our Take-A-Break program. This week was no different with 18 children from a small school in North Bendigo, known as Lightning Reef Primary. Alongside the kids we had three of their lovely teaching staff attend too, who generously helped out with the running of the camp.

As most of these country kids have either rarely or never visited a beach before, we just knew we had to make the most of their time at Cottage by the Sea by squeezing in as many water based activities as possible. Heading to Point Lonsdale early one morning and followed by a visit to the Marine Discovery Centre allowed us to not only show but teach the children as much as we could about our beautiful ocean and coastal marine life.

In the afternoon, it was time to put on our wetsuits and splash about in the waves down at the Cottage beach and it wouldn’t be a true seaside experience without at least one surfing lesson and session! Plenty of time was spent making sandcastles, digging holes and racing each other along the sand before our time on camp together came to an end.

Thanks to Lightning Reef Primary School for all the smiles, laughs and fun that they’ve brought to Cottage this week, we have loved having you!
