Fun times by the Sea

Our Stories

After a long journey from Bendigo to the Bellarine Peninsular, 35 sleepy year fives and sixes from Eaglehawk Primary School entered the grounds at Cottage by the Sea. Tiredness was quickly replaced with excitement once the colourful playground was spotted!  Closely followed by the first glimpse of the infamous Rip from the Cottage dining area which boasts fantastic views across the bay towards Point Nepean.

The food at Cottage is always a favourite, and what better way to welcome our new campers than a huge platter of fresh fruit and banana muffins? During their stay Eaglehawk PS enjoyed meals including soup and toasties, a BBQ buffet, spaghetti Bolognese and delicious fresh fish caught by the children on their amazing fishing charter with Gone Fishing!

Each day at Cottage by the Sea is filled with new adventures, fun excursions opportunities, and this Take a Break camp was no exception.  Campers were able to learn about the local marine wildlife at the Marine and Fresh Water Discovery Centre, followed by a trip to Barwon Heads at low tide to see what they could find in the wild.  Sea Stars were a favourite, along with crabs and array of snails.  Queenscliff marina, including a climb up the stairs at 360Q, gave the campers a beautiful aerial view Queenscliff, Swan Bay, Point Lonsdale and beyond.

As ever, the activities that gave our Eaglehawk PS campers the biggest smiles were the water activities. A short stroll down from Cottage the children had the wonderful feeling of warm sand underfoot. The gentle crashing of waves builds the anticipation of entering the 20 degree crystal clear water of Port Phillip.  What a thrill!

On the final day of camp, campers were able to experience a fishing charter with Gone Fishing.  Rising early was worth it as the children from Bendigo reeled in an array of beautiful fish. Some, like the stunning butterfly Gurnard, were returned to the ocean. But the huge catch of Flatheads was kept and brought back to Cottage. Campers were taught how to prepare the fish which was served in delicious tacos for the final lunch at Cottage.

There were very happy faces after a wonderful camp. As well as a few sombre faces at the realisation that this special time was coming to an end.  A great time was had by all 🙂
