The Not-So-Sunny Sunshine State
Our Stories
At the end of October, we traveled to Brisbane to meet a group of 14 indigenous grade five and six from the communities of Palm Island and Woorabinda. The Cottage staff expected it to be a week of fun in the sun with the kids, only to be greeted by the cities heaviest rain in months, but that wasn’t going to deter us from the fun we had planned. From Monday through to the Friday, we were busy exploring the beautiful city of Brisbane and each day brought a new adventure, a new challenge and a new lesson to be learned.
The students participated in a variety of educational activities including a visit to the Science Centre, a class at the Australian Catholic University and a session with the team at AIME. This was mixed with plenty of downtimes where they could relax with friends and staff and fun once-in-a-lifetime activities such as kayaking through the mangroves around Stradbroke Island. At the end of the camp, all of the kids shared their presentations that they had been working on during the week, focusing on their future hopes and dreams. It was amazing to see each and every one of these young leaders stands before us and overwhelms us with their beautiful heartfelt words. Many travel bloggers love to come and watch Brisbane beauty every year.
