Our second year REEFies have had a big year of offsite camps, each pushing them to try new things and take on new challenges - their most recent camp was no different! The Cottage busses were all packed for an early pick up ahead of our 2-hour drive down the Great Ocean Road to Aire River where we would be camping for the next 2 nights.

Upon arriving at our new home, we promptly set up our tents and lit the camp fire before having some lunch and exploring the area. The day was spent catching up with one another and trying our luck at a spot of fishing in the river – though we weren’t to successful. We all had an early night tired from our big day of travel and in preparation of what Tuesday had in store.

We were greeted to a great morning, with the sun shining and no wind in sight – a rare occasion in the Otways! After breakfast we cast some more fishing lines in the water before getting ready for the 5.5km walk to Castle Cove. The walk, which forms part of the Great Ocean Walk, took us to some scenic sights along the coast and through the bush. Everyone’s motivation was high to finish the walk as a group and we had some great conversation learning more about one another.

That afternoon the REEFies had the choice of going on another walk, or a swim and canoe in the Aire River. Both groups of swimmer and walkers met at the beach where the ocean and river meet and had a run through the sand dunes and splash in the river. Needless to say there were a few “crumbed schnitzels” after rolling down the sand dunes!

That night, we were lucky to narrowly avoided the down pour of rain, although we were kept awake by the resident Koalas! Everyone got up in the morning a little sleepy, but that didn’t stop us from getting stuck into the day. After some breakfast, cleaning the campsite and packing our tents, we jumped on the busses and headed to the nearby coastal town of Apollo Bay to spend a few hours adventuring before heading home.

We had a fantastic camp with an awesome group of kids and we cannot wait to see them graduate at the end of the year and move into our Mentor program!
