The Mentors Amazing Race

Our Stories

It was the first week of the July school holidays and our 37 Mentors had just returned from the 88th floor on the Eureka Skydeck where they had experienced the thrill of ‘The Edge’. In teams of nine The Race was ready to begin. The aim of this race was to score as many points as they could by using a map of the city and race booklet. The Mentors needed to use their general knowledge of Melbourne to answer the clues to figure out which location they needed to visit. Once at the location they were required to take a team photo, video or collect an information brochure.

On “Go” the team were off racing to the Yarra, Shrine of Remembrance, MCG, Queen Victoria Market, Fitzroy Gardens and the Governor’s House. You could even find them counting the giant golden bees, learning about The Travellers on the Sandridge Bridge or singing ’Row, row, row your boat’ amongst a crowd at Federation square.

The Mentors travelled far during the race allowing them time to get to know each other better, learn about the sights of Melbourne and support each other. It was a great chance for our Mentors to motivate each other, take responsibility, lead and support each other. After four hours of exploring the sights of Melbourne, The Race was over.

However, the Amazing Race for the Mentors really continued as they walked to the Queen Victoria Night Market that evening.

Thursday was more walking: to and through the Botanical Gardens; back to Docklands and all around Glow Golf and Art Vo. The evening’s walk was to Melbourne Star to see the Melbourne skyline light up!

Friday morning’s walk was to the South Melbourne Markets to grab a few bargains and taste some delicious market food. The final stretch of their Amazing Race was the walk from the accommodation to Southern Cross station.

It really was an epic four day Amazing Race around Melbourne.  All-in-all our Mentors walked over 60 kilometres to explore the Melbourne skyline, environment and market food.
