Saving Tawny Frogmouth

Our Stories

It was raining when the children arrived at the new park in ocean grove. Eager to test out the new play equipment, they waited patiently for the blue sky to come.

Once off the bus, they raced to the top of the new spiral slide. Camp Leader Jess and a few children noticed a bird on the ground under the big pine tree. It was clear the Tawny Frogmouth was injured and unable to fly.

A quick phone call to Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary in Barwon Heads, and we were advised to collect the bird in a jumper, and drive it over to Barwon Heads for some professional care.

The children were excited to be able to help the injured bird. Jess carefully wrapped up the bird, and we all hopped quietly on the bus for the short drive to Jirrahlinga.

Once there, the lovely staff came out to greet the children carrying a wombat for them to meet and pat. The children hopped off the bus and posed for a photo in front of Jirrahlinga, and were delighted to be invited inside to meet all the other animals.

Once inside, the staff took the children into the koala enclosure where they were able to pat the fluffy Koala.  We were then able to wander around and check out all the other animals, from kangaroos to ducks, wombats, reptiles and the cheeky talking cockatoo’s. The afternoon turned out better than we could have hoped for and the rain stayed away too.

Thanks again Jirrahlinga for your wonderful generosity.
