We keep on giving

Our Stories

Here at Cottage our campers appreciate the generousity of our supporters who give them gifts; knitted items, food, toys, clothes and funds to pay for their incredible camp experiences. As part of our Recreation, Education, Environment and Friendship (R.E.E.F.) program, we like to teach our campers to give back to the community that so kindly gives to them. This week our campers journeyed to Jirrahlinga Koala & Wildlife Sanctuary to volunteer their time and help.

Camper Monique was first to volunteer to help, she was incredibly excited to be mulching the koala’s enclosure.

Monique was seen wheelbarrowing the mulch through Jirrahlinga to the far corners of the koala enclosure. There was the occasional stop to pat koala Kate on the back as she wandered on by. Before you knew it Monique was, back to rake the mulch, spreading it evenly over the garden beds and of course stopping to watch, Kate the koala walk along the ground and climb into the next tree.

The next task Monique was jumping for joy to help with was gate-keeping duties. This involved standing in and out of a muddy puddle to let the wheelbarrows through but keep the Cape Baron geese in. While waiting for the wheelbarrow loads Monique could be seen investigating the turtle pond, she even found a baby long necked turtle that was the size of a 50-cent coin.

The Jirrahlinga keeper was so impressed by Monique’s efforts he wanted to clone her! It is moments like these our campers get to show their compassion for the community, experience what it feels like to make a difference and influence them to keep on giving.

Last year, more than 1,400 children were inspired, had fun and accessed new opportunities through our children’s programs. As Cottage by the Sea programs receive no government funding, we rely on the generosity of corporate sponsors, individual donations and contributions.
