First Aid Training for our Mentors

Our Stories

Our Year 9 Mentor program participants get the opportunity to learn valuable life skills while gaining an important qualification. Every year, we have Wilderness First Aid Australia come and put our Mentors through their paces by teaching them first aid and CPR. The course is very informative but also very fun, with lots of different scenarios that test the Mentors and push them out of their comfort zones in a supportive environment.

Richo the facilitator has an amazing amount of experience with first aid and was very generous in sharing his knowledge with the Mentors to help them put the theory into practice. The highlight of the course is most definitely when the makeup comes out and the Mentors get painted up to look like they have been seriously injured. The Mentors did their best to not giggle at one another when playing the role of an unconscious patient in the scenarios! They did an amazing job keeping it together so their partner could work through the steps and provide the correct first aid.

Richo was amazed but not surprised at just how well the Mentors consumed the information and supported one another with the practical component. After 2 years in the REEF program and 1 year as Mentor participants, these young people are respectful and grateful young adults. These qualities are not only a testament to the programs we run but to the young people as well!

All the Mentors passed the course with flying colours. They are stoked that they have another qualification gained from being a part of Cottage by the Sea, which will help with their future employment prospects.
