The lasting impact of Cottage by the Sea

Our Stories

Every week we are reminded of the impact of Cottage by the Sea by the program participants who provide their feedback. But the impact of an experience at Cottage by the Sea lasts well beyond the duration of a program. For many Cottage alumni, the impact is lifelong. On Saturday morning, a lovely listener called in to ABC Radio Melbourne to share her experiences at Cottage as a child. Here is some of her feedback:

“We didn’t have much money so there was no chance ever of having a holiday, and somehow my darling mother heard about Cottage by the Sea, where children could go for short-term holidays. I went when I was aged 7 and 8 – I turned 79 yesterday. I was very homesick at the age of 7 – as you can imagine – but the staff were just awesome. I’ve got such fond memories of that place. I had a wonderful time. I think that the impact of a holiday at Cottage by the Sea can make a positive change that lasts a lifetime for children.”

Receiving such meaningful feedback like this from Cottage alumni reminds us of some wise words from Kathy Calvin, CEO of the United Nations Foundation: “Giving is not just about making a donation, it’s about making a difference.”

Here are some photos from our archives that are roughly from the time this woman stayed at Cottage by the Sea.
